Tales Of Suspense - Issue 049 - The New Iron Man meets The Angel

January 1964

In which the heroic Angel turns super villain and tries to destroy ally and Avenger Iron Man and the X-Men must try to stop them.

This issue contained two stories, however this blog will cover only the X-Men related story.

Cover Story

We are of course in a completely different comic-book that our usual territory here, and it shows. The cover art is produced by our usual team, with the substitution of Steve Ditko for Jack Kirby,

The cover has a very different feel to our Uncanny X-Men covers, instead if a plain background framing a very staged group of characters, this cover features a scene which could easily be an extra panel in the book.

Angel is inked a little differently to his usual style, there is little blue as Reinman has largely inked the blue parts, but the yellow has far more tonal variation. This gives angel a more realistic look, coupled with more angular wings adds something to the dynamic feel.

Iron Man is presented prone and defeated a real look of fear in the only part of Tony Stark's face that shows through the armour, The red and gold armour is rendered beautifully, considering the amount of detail in the breastplate of the suit, it is impressive to find such a dynamic pose with the detail intact.

The red sky over the city provides a dramatic backdrop to this epic battle, Interestingly the X-Man of the piece has to be indicated with a giant black arrow, perhaps suggesting that the aim of this appearance was to promote the X-Men comic-book, rather than bolster 'Tales of Suspense'

Overall its a great cover that really conveys the dramatic story within, the only let down is the lettering in the black arrow introducing the guest star, somehow it doesn't resonate with the other powerful lettering on the page.

Angel returns to the school and announces that he is leaving the X-Men. The X-Men try to restrain him until Professor X returns. They are unabe to stop the newly evil Angel who leaves the school in search of evil mutants to team up with.

Iron Man to the Rescue

Angel ignores a direct order from Professor Xavier to return to the school. Xavier worries that he has failed Angel and orders Cyclops to contact the Avengers.

Only Iron Man is available to receive the call for help, and decides to stop Angel himself rather than rally the other Avengers. He pledges to undo the harm he has caused, or die trying.

Angel tries to attract the attention of the evil mutants around the city, he causes no damage but hopes the explosions will draw the evil mutants out.

Tales of Suspense

Tales of Suspense was a Marvel comic-book that ran for 99 issues from 1959 to 1968. Originally a science-fiction anthology book in issue 39 Iron Man debuted and became the books star for twenty issues before Captain America joined and shared the star billing.

Cross-overs and cameos were common during this period although this is the X-Men's only appearance in the series. Tales of Suspense came to an end when issue 100 was instead named Captain America, Iron Man would also get his own book in the same year.

Advertisement Corner

Advertisements for coin collecting were common in the X-Comics of the 1960's unlike the similar stamp collecting advertisements, they do not advocate coin collecting for the sake of collecting, but encourage the collector to find rare coins and sell them on.

The star coin they list in this advertisement, the 1804 silver dollar for which the company claim to be willing to pay $11,750. One of these coins sold at auction in 2013 for an astonishing $3,877,500.

It's not actually a coin minted in 1804, but instead a commemorative coin intended as a diplomatic gift from then President Andrew Jackson. While it says 12 are accounted for in the advert, by the time we reach 2013 only 8 are in circulation. Check the backs of your draws, you never know,
